Specified Skilled Worker (SSW Visa / 特定技能ビザ)
The Specified Skilled Worker Visa (SSW) is designed to bring foreign workers into 12 industries that are experiencing labor shortages in Japan. These include: Caregiving, construction, food service, agriculture, manufacturing, cleaning, etc. There are two types
- SSW Type 1: Requires passing skill and Japanese language tests
- SSW Type 2: For advanced workers; allows family accompaniment and longer stay
Eligibility Requirements
- Pass the JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic Japanese test (or equivalent)
- Pass the industry specific skill test
- Health and character check
- No academic background required
Visa Duration
- SSW Type 1: Renewable up to 5 years total
- SSW Type 2: Renewable with no limit and allows family
